Tips for Better Experience

7 Things to Know for Families Traveling with Small Children

Families with small children have various things to consider during their trip. When my family traveled abroad with our daughter, we found that gathering information beforehand was crucial. In this article, I’d like to compile some baby-related information about Japan.

Elevators are Generally Available

In places like train stations and commercial facilities, elevators are usually available, so using a stroller won’t be a problem. However, when going to rural areas or specific tourist spots, it’s better to check in advance.

Diaper Changing

Commercial facilities and major train stations have diaper changing facilities, so it shouldn’t be a major issue. You may be surprised at how well-maintained these facilities are.

High Chairs

High chairs are often available in eateries in shopping malls and commercial facilities. However, they may not be provided in street-side shops or smaller establishments, so be mindful of this. It’s a good idea to inquire in advance if you’re making a reservation.

Car Seat

In Japan, it is mandatory to use a car seat when you drive by yourself, but it’s not required for taxis or hired cars. However, considering your child’s safety, it’s recommended to have one. Some taxi companies and hired car services can arrange child seats, so consult your hotel for assistance. Buses and trains allow you to board with strollers, but it’s best to avoid rush hours when they can get crowded.

Excellent Baby Goods

Baby goods sold in Japan come highly recommended! They are functional, of good quality, and reasonably priced. From diapers and clothing to baby food and toys, you’ll find a wide variety of attractive products. Slip-proof socks are especially praised for their non-slip feature, and the diaper plastic bags that don’t let odor escape are also highly functional and affordable. Don’t miss the famous store called “Akachan Honpo,” where you can find most baby items. Additionally, UNIQLO’s children’s clothing is of great quality and much cheaper than buying overseas, so I recommend it as well.

Preparedness Gives Peace of Mind

While baby care products are available in Japan, using the ones from your own country, such as diapers and baby food, will give you peace of mind. It’s more of a psychological measure for reassurance. Consume many diapers during the trip and fill the empty space with souvenirs! 🙂

No Need to Worry About Shortages – Rely on Hotels and Amazon

Despite all the preparations, unforeseen situations can arise during travels. However, there’s no need to panic if something runs out. Pharmacies, Amazon, department stores, and shopping malls usually have what you need, so don’t worry. If you consult your hotel, they can quickly provide answers. Purchasing from Amazon saves you the trouble of going to a physical store.
